are YOU a Morsel Munk?
Among other lessons growing up, my family taught me to play sports. Mom was always
active, serving as a great role model. Dad and my older brother taught me how to throw
a baseball, swing a bat, play football, ride a bike, spike a volleyball...you get the idea.
Dad's words still resonate as if he spoke them just yesterday: "You throw like a girl."
"You hit like a girl." "You run like a girl." It never occurred to me to respond, "But I AM a
girl."
Dad's words served their intended purpose - they pushed me harder and challenged me
to be the best and strongest I can be. Of course, Dad knows that there's nothing wrong
with playing like a girl. There are so many amazing female athletes and role models of all
kinds.
The moral of this story is to not impose any limits on yourself,
and don't let society impose any limits on you. Whether it's on
the playing field, in the classroom, in your career, or in raising
your family, be the best that you can be. Measure yourself not by
others' standards, but by whether you're giving it all you've got.
Encourage others to do the same. And tolerate all differences.
Do this, and you will be an inspiration to those around you.
And remember. It's not, "You're good for a girl." It stops at,
"You're good!".
